The Chinese government has issued a strong warning against external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening possible military action over alleged persecution of Christians.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Beijing “firmly supports the administration of President Bola Tinubu as it leads the Nigerian people on a development path suited to its national realities.”
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another nation’s internal affairs or to threaten it with sanctions or force,” Mao stated.
The comments come amid growing international reactions to Trump’s controversial statement, which has stirred diplomatic unease across Africa and beyond.
