Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have abducted an unspecified number of students during an attack on a secondary school in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attackers reportedly stormed Government Day Secondary School on Monday morning while students were sitting for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO).
Sources said one teacher was killed during the attack, while another sustained injuries.
The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that some students are still unaccounted for.
According to him, the suspected insurgents invaded the Lassa community on motorcycles at about 9 a.m. on Monday.
He said security operatives, including the police, military personnel, hunters, and vigilante groups, have launched a search operation in the area to rescue the abducted students and locate those still missing.
The latest attack adds to the growing number of abductions and assaults on schools by terrorists and armed groups across Nigeria.
In May, gunmen attacked a primary school in Chibok, Borno State, and abducted 42 children. Similarly, about 39 students and seven teachers were kidnapped after armed men invaded three schools in the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Ogbomoso in Oyo State.
The incidents sparked nationwide outrage and protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other stakeholders, who called for improved security in schools across the country.
