CITAD reaffirms commitment to press freedom

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria.

A statement by Professor Y.Z Yau, CITAD executive director, to mark the World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, said a free and independent media remains essential to democracy, accountability, and informed citizen participation.

According to Yau, journalists across the country continue to face harassment, arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, and intimidation in the course of their work.

He said the actions undermine democratic values and erode public trust in institutions.

CITAD expressed deep concern over the growing cases of repression against journalists by both state and non-state actors.

The statement reads, “We strongly condemn such violations and call on authorities to respect and uphold press freedom as guaranteed by the Constitution and international human rights standards, including those advanced by the United Nations.

“Beyond safety, we emphasize the urgent need to improve the welfare and dignity of journalists. Poor remuneration, precarious working conditions, and lack of institutional protection leave many media professionals vulnerable to undue influence and compromise their independence.

“Addressing these challenges is critical to strengthening Nigeria’s media landscape.”

CITAD added that in the digital era, press freedom is closely tied to digital rights, saying the ability to access and share information online without fear is central to promoting knowledge and civic engagement.

The statement added that restrictions such as censorship, surveillance, and online harassment threaten both press freedom and the broader right to information.

It said, “CITAD therefore calls for an immediate end to the harassment and detention of journalists, improved welfare and protection for media practitioners, and stronger safeguards for digital rights.

“A society that silences its journalists risks weakening its democracy. CITAD stands in solidarity with journalists across Nigeria.”
