The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) strongly condemns the assault on Albarka Radio reporter, Mohammed Adamu, by police officers while he was carrying out his professional duties during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government.
Mr. Adamu was at the event to provide media coverage when he was stopped by police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir. Despite identifying himself as a journalist and attempting to access the designated media area, he was allegedly beaten by multiple officers, resulting in injuries to his head and forcing him to seek medical attention.
CITAD considers this act a grave violation of press freedom and a direct attack on the fundamental rights of journalists in Nigeria. Journalists play a critical role in informing the public and ensuring accountability, and any attempt to intimidate or harm them undermines democratic governance and the rule of law.
This incident is not isolated but reflects a troubling pattern of harassment and violence against journalists by security agencies. Such actions create a climate of fear and restrict the ability of the media to operate freely and independently.

- European leaders decline Trump’s request for help to reopen Strait of Hormuz
We therefore call for:
1. An immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident.
2. The identification and prosecution of all officers involved in the assault.
3. Adequate compensation and protection for the assaulted journalist.
4. Clear directives and training for security agencies to respect and protect journalists in the course of their duties.
CITAD urges the Inspector-General of Police and relevant authorities to take decisive action to end the growing trend of attacks on journalists and to ensure accountability for violations.
Nigeria must remain a country where journalists can carry out their work without fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence. Protecting press freedom is essential to safeguarding democracy and the rights of all citizens.
