Tinubu nominates Lamido Yuguda as CBN deputy governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the nomination of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the senate.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the presidency.

According to the statement, the nomination was made in line with Section 8(1) of the CBN Act, 2007.

Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the former deputy governor of the apex bank, Bala Bello, as special adviser to the president on political economy.

Tinubu charged Yuguda and other officials to discharge their duties with renewed dedication, professionalism and commitment to ensuring Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

Before the nomination, Yuguda served as director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2020 to 2024.

He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in accountancy in 1983. He later earned a master’s degree in money, banking and finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom in 1991.

Yuguda is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a CFA charterholder.

He began his career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a senior supervisor in the foreign operations department.

Between 1997 and 2001, he worked as an economist in the Africa department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), before returning to the CBN. He retired from the bank in 2016 after serving as director of the reserve management department for six years.

The statement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy.
