Resident Doctors at AKTH Kano to Join Nationwide Indefinite Strike

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano, has announced its participation in a total and indefinite nationwide strike, starting at 12:00 midnight on Monday, 12th January 2026.

In a press statement, ARD AKTH said the decision follows prolonged discussions and repeated unfulfilled assurances from authorities regarding key welfare, training, and remuneration issues affecting resident doctors across Nigeria. The strike aligns with directives from the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

The doctors’ demands include the reinstatement of the FTH Lokoja Five, payment of all outstanding salaries and promotion arrears, full implementation of professional and specialist allowances, and resolution of salary delays for House Officers. They also seek clarification from the Federal Ministry of Health on entry-level placement issues, issuance of certificates post-Part I exams by NPMCN, and the commencement of committees on locum practice and work-hour regulations.

ARD AKTH warned that continued neglect of these issues poses serious risks to healthcare delivery, staff morale, and patient safety. While open to genuine negotiations, the association said it will remain on strike until concrete and time-bound resolutions are achieved.

Dr. Bello Aminu Bello, President of ARD AKTH, signed the statement, emphasizing solidarity with resident doctors nationwide.
