5 children drown as boat capsizes in Benue

Five children were reported  to have drowned after a canoe carrying in Obagaji community of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The occupants and their father were on their way back from the farm when the canoe capsized.

The incident was said to have happened on Sunday evening when the farmer, Ameh, was coming back from the farm with his six children.

Their canoe reportedly became unstable under the weight of heavy farm produce and overturned in the river.

Sources said local divers immediately launched a rescue operation, but only Ameh and one of his children were found alive, while five others drowned.

Chairman of Agatu Local Government, Melvin James, confirmed the news to journalists in Makurdi on Monday.
