President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive covers ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, heads of government agencies, and other political office holders.
The order was communicated in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by George Akume. It states that the directive aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the circular, all affected officials must submit their formal resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the deadline.
President Tinubu said the measure is intended to ensure compliance with electoral laws, promote transparency, and create a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the 2027 elections.
