12-year-old girl drowns Kwara well

A 12-year-old girl identified as Nabilat died on Saturday after falling into a well in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital.

The incident happened around 10:35 in the morning at Busari Alao Street in Ikoyi Community in the Irewolede area of Ilorin.

The victim reportedly slipped and tumbled into the well while fetching water.

The situation caused panic in the area as residents made desperate attempts to rescue her before a resident, Mayowa, alerted the Fire Service.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after and recovered the body from the well.

Her remains were later handed over to a family member.

According to the Fire Service, the girl had gone to fetch water when one of her legs slipped, which caused her to fall into the well.

Adekunle said the Director of the Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, expressed sadness over the incident and advised residents to be more careful in their daily activities.

He said the Director also cautioned families against sending young children to fetch water from domestic wells.
