The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Zamfara State Government and the APC family in the state after what it described as extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, and supporters across the state.
According to the statement, the decision was taken after careful consideration and in the interest of ensuring stability, progress, and sustainable development in the state.
Governor Lawal explained that the move followed the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both national and state levels, which he said had created uncertainty capable of affecting effective governance.
The governor said his primary responsibility remained the peace, security, and development of Zamfara State, adding that aligning with the APC would provide greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government.
The statement noted that the final deliberation leading to the decision was held at the Government House in Gusau and was coordinated by the Deputy Governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.
Lawal also expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years but said the current political realities and unresolved crisis within the party made the defection necessary.
He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, improving security, accelerating development, and ensuring that Zamfara State benefits from stronger collaboration with the Federal Government.
The state government therefore called on citizens, political leaders, and party supporters to remain calm and support the administration as the state enters what it described as a new political phase.
