UniAbuja Alumni Demand Fairness, Transparency in VC Nomination

By Adamu Abdullahi

The University of Abuja Alumni Association has called on the institution’s Governing Council to ensure a transparent and merit-driven process in the nomination of candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor, as the university prepares to appoint a substantive head.

The association emphasized that the University requires a Vice-Chancellor who is capable, visionary, and well-grounded in the unique culture and challenges of the institution.

According to the Alumni Association, the demand for transparency stems from growing concerns that the process of appointing Vice-Chancellors in many universities has often been flawed, lacking in meritocracy, and influenced by political interference. The group called for clear, merit-based selection criteria, an end to political manipulation, and for governing councils to take full responsibility for the process.

The association noted that recent disputes in various universities have exposed issues such as the emergence of predetermined candidates, disregard for due process, and actions that could undermine the legitimacy of the institutions and the value of their degrees.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Rauf Olaiya Sarafadeen-Kunle, on behalf of the National President, the association urged the Governing Council of the University of Abuja to ensure that the ongoing selection process is guided strictly by merit and remains free from political interference or undue influence.
