Two sentenced to death for killing groom in Kano

A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for killing a groom during a late-night robbery attack in Kano state.

The convicts, Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, residents of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide in connection with the death of Yazid Haruna.

Delivering judgment, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt, describing the attack as brutal and deeply troubling.

She also expressed concern over the growing incidence of violent robberies linked to mobile phone theft in parts of the state.

According to the prosecution, led by Barrister Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the offence occurred in the early hours of June 11, 2025, at about 2:47 a.m. in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.

The court heard that the defendants conspired and armed themselves with long knives and a machete before attacking the victim.

During the assault, they reportedly robbed Haruna of two mobile phones and N19,500.

He was stabbed multiple times and later died from his injuries.

The prosecution called three witnesses and tendered medical reports to support its case.

The defendants denied the charges.

Their counsel, Barrister Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, presented them to testify in their own defence and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

In her ruling, Justice Adamu-Aliyu found the defendants guilty under Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.

The court sentenced each of the convicts to one year imprisonment for conspiracy, life imprisonment for armed robbery and death by hanging for culpable homicide

In a related development, the same convicts had earlier been sentenced to death by another Kano State High Court on October 20, 2025, for the killing of a lecturer during a separate phone-related robbery.
