Shoprite, Nigeria’s largest retail chain, has shut its stores in Ibadan and Ilorin, sparking concerns among customers as shelves in its Lagos and Abuja outlets stand nearly empty.
According to some staff members, the closure is reportedly linked to supply chain disruptions and fianncial strain affecting the retailer’s operations nationwide.
Customers who visited stores in Lagos and Abuja were met with nearly-empty aisles, with basic groceries, household items and fresh produce largely unavailable.

Daily Trust reports that the firm is struggling to stay afloat since the exit of its former South African owner from Nigeria’s retail business.
Our sources said that Shoprite is fast losing its dominance in the space with most of its outlets virtually empty and on the verge of shutting down.
Shoprite store opened in Lagos in 2005, and it has become a household name in the retail supermarket segment, as it expanded to eight states including the federal capital territory with no fewer than 25 stores.
