Police Rearrest Sowore Hours After Court Granted Him Bail

The Nigeria Police Force has rearrested former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, shortly after he was granted bail by a Magistrate Court.

Sowore, along with over a dozen protesters, had earlier been granted bail following their arrest during a demonstration on October 20 against the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Reports indicate that Sowore and 12 others, including Prince Emmanuel Kanu — the brother of the IPOB leader — were taken into custody earlier in the week.

In a statement issued by his legal team, the lawyers condemned the activist’s rearrest, describing it as “a mockery of the rule of law” and a violation of his fundamental rights.

The police have yet to comment on the reasons behind the rearrest as of the time of filing this report.
