Police engage stakeholders on farmer-herder conflict in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has engaged stakeholders in Darazo Local Government Area to advocate for lasting peace following the lingering issues of farmer-herder conflict in the region.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, the move was part of efforts to promote peace and security across Bauchi State.

Wakil explained that the state Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, led the operational visit to Darazo on October 1, 2025.

Wakil said the Commissioner revealed that “This visit represents a significant step towards addressing the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders in the region. The event was attended by the Executive Chairman of Darazo Local Government, community leaders, representatives of both farming and herding communities, as well as other essential stakeholders.”

In his remarks, the Chairman of Darazo Local Government Council, Sama’ila Sade, stressed the need for identifying sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by the area.

He emphasised the importance of unity and dialogue among all parties involved.

The statement highlighted key outcomes of the engagement to include the Commissioner’s reaffirmation of the command’s commitment to fostering peace and security, promotion of non-violent conflict resolution methods, and the adoption of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) strategies in collaboration with both farmers and herders.

It added that a targeted initiative would be launched to manage the presence of foreign herders in Darazo LGA, aimed at promoting community harmony and stability.

The Commissioner also encouraged residents to actively support security efforts by sharing useful information with the police and respecting the rule of law.

Wakil further disclosed that the Commissioner cautioned both farmers and herders against taking the law into their own hands, warning that the command would not condone violent reprisals.

He added that a special operation would soon be conducted to remove foreign herders involved in violent or disruptive activities, while plans are also underway to increase the deployment of police personnel to strengthen the workforce at the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters.
