Growing Fears of Coup d’État in Madagascar

Fears of Coup d’État are rising in Madagascar after a unit in the country’s military broke from the government on Saturday and sided with protesters.

The protesters have been calling for the President Andry Rajoelina’’s resignation, raising fears of a coup attempt on the island nation off the coast of southern Africa.

Youth-led demonstrations have threatened Andry Rajoelina’s grip on power.

However, Rajoelina’s whereabouts is unknown, but his office released a statement Saturday night, saying that he and the prime minister were “fully in control of the nation’s affairs.”

The prime minister, Gen. Ruphin Fortunat Zafisamb, who was appointed less than a week ago, called for calm and dialogue.

He said, “It is unthinkable for the armed forces to shoot at each other.
