The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a police officer and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspect, identified as Nasiru Shitu, a resident of Kofar Waika Quarters in Kano, was apprehended on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at about 5:00 p.m. while dressed in a suspected police uniform.
Police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, said Shitu was arrested at Kofar Dawanau, an area that had recorded several complaints of extortion involving fake police officers.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is neither a police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary, but an impostor who has been disguising as a police officer to extort members of the public,” Kiyawa said.
He added that the suspect will be charged to court, while further investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of his activities and identify possible accomplices.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, called on members of the public with useful information or complaints regarding the suspect, or similar cases, to reach the command through its emergency number: 07038188127.
The command assured residents that it remains committed to protecting lives and property in the state and will not relent in bringing impostors and other criminals to justice.
