By By Adamu Abdullahi

Aso Mirror Newspaper has held a public lecture to commemorate its first anniversary, highlighting the vital role of community journalism in national development.

The milestone event took place at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Area 10, Abuja, and featured lectures and award presentations to distinguished personalities.

As part of its commitment to celebrating the press as a force for social integration and community development, Aso Mirror honoured several individuals for their contributions to society.

The former FCT Public Complaints Commissioner, Hon. Dalhatu Ezekiel, who was honoured with the “Outstanding People’s Advocate” award, also served as the guest speaker at the event. He delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Community Newspapers in Shaping the FCT Narrative.”

In his address, Hon. Ezekiel emphasized that information is power, noting that “the more informed a society is, the more powerful it becomes.” He added that community newspapers play a crucial role in highlighting stories that define local identity—covering artists, students, and volunteers whose achievements might otherwise go unnoticed.

Other award recipients included HRH Alhaji Idris Musa, the Emir of Jiwa, who received the “Community Builder Award”; Engr. Shittu Usman, Coordinator, Coalition of FCT Indigenous Associations, honoured as “Outstanding Professional Engineer”; CSP Langyi Lar Lakar, DPO, Karu Division of the Nigeria Police, recognized with the “Community Safety Award”; and Mr. Kingsley Madaki, Senior Special Assistant to the AMAC Chairman on Media and Publicity, who received the “Outstanding Spokesman Award.”
