Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Alleged Crackdown on Critics in Kano

Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over what it described as escalating repression and shrinking civic space in Kano, warning that recent arrests and detentions of government critics threaten freedom of expression in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, the rights group alleged a disturbing pattern of arrests, detention, and harassment of individuals accused of criticizing Abba Kabir Yusuf. It claimed that in most cases, those targeted were either arrested or “invited” for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to Amnesty International, the development has created what it termed a “toxic climate of fear,” with security agencies allegedly being used to silence dissent and intimidate critics.

The organization cited several recent cases it said illustrate abuse of power and manipulation of law enforcement in the state.

Among them is Abba Ibrahim Hussain, who Amnesty said was picked up by armed DSS personnel at his residence in Kano on Sunday over comments critical of the governor. The group noted that Hussain remains in detention and risks missing ongoing examinations at Northwest University, where he studies law.

The statement also referenced Aminu Warkal, described as a social media influencer, who was reportedly detained for five hours by the DSS over allegations of “cyberbullying” the governor.

Similarly, Samir Hanga was said to have been summoned by the DSS for questioning over his criticism of the governor and later released. Amnesty claimed the interrogation was aimed at silencing him.

In another case, Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda was allegedly arrested two weeks ago and compelled to withdraw his criticism of the governor.

Amnesty further alleged that Saifullahi Abubakar was unlawfully arrested and detained for posting a satirical TikTok video about the governor, stressing that satire and criticism of public officials are not crimes.

The rights organization maintained that no public official is above criticism and described the arrest of critics as unacceptable in a democratic society.

It added that while social media has become an important platform for Nigerians to express views on social and political issues, critics in Kano now face increasing risks of intimidation, arrest, and detention.

Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to respect, protect, and uphold the right to freedom of expression for all citizens.
