ADC, NNPP Reject Electoral Act 2026, Demand Fresh Amendment by N’Assembly

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have rejected the recently signed Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, describing it as a threat to democracy and an alleged attempt to entrench a one-party system in Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, NNPP National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, spoke on behalf of the opposition parties. He stated that they would explore all constitutional and legal avenues to halt the implementation of the amended Electoral Act.

Ahmed called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to immediately initiate a fresh amendment process to expunge what he described as “obnoxious provisions” in the law.

“We demand that the National Assembly urgently commence a fresh amendment of the Electoral Act 2026 to remove all objectionable clauses and ensure that the law reflects the will and aspirations of Nigerians for a free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process. Nothing short of this will be acceptable to Nigerians,” he said.
